Electro-Cleaning Process in Electroplating – Complete Industrial Guide for Better Adhesion & Quality

In the electroplating industry, one rule is always true: “If cleaning is poor, plating will fail.”

Electro-cleaning is one of the most important pre-treatment processes in zinc electroplating. It removes oil, grease, oxides and microscopic contaminants from the metal surface before plating.

At Rawat Electroplaters, Faridabad, we understand that strong adhesion and long-lasting zinc plating quality start with proper surface preparation.

What Is Electro-Cleaning?

Electro-cleaning is a process where an alkaline chemical solution and DC current are used together to clean metal surfaces before electroplating.

During the process, gas bubbles form on the metal surface due to electrolysis. These microscopic bubbles help remove contaminants from the surface through mechanical action.

This process improves:

  • ✔ Zinc plating adhesion
  • ✔ Surface cleanliness
  • ✔ Coating uniformity
  • ✔ Corrosion resistance

Electro-Cleaning Setup & Machinery

MS Tank

Mild steel tanks are commonly used because alkaline chemicals generally do not damage mild steel.

Stainless Steel Plates

SS 304 or SS 316 plates are generally used as electrodes for anodic and cathodic cleaning.

DC Rectifier

A rectifier with suitable ampere capacity helps maintain stable cleaning current during operation.

Heating System

The electro-cleaning solution is typically maintained between:

60°C to 80°C

Air Agitation

Air pipes improve solution movement and help maintain uniform cleaning performance.

Basic Electro-Cleaning Chemical Formula

Chemical Approx Quantity Purpose
Caustic Soda 50–70 g/L Cleaning & conductivity
Sodium Carbonate 20–30 g/L Buffering & pH balance
Sodium Metasilicate 10–15 g/L Grease removal
Wetting Agent 2–5 ml/L Reduce surface tension

Step-by-Step Electro-Cleaning Process

1. Pre-Soak Cleaning

The parts are first dipped in hot alkaline solution to loosen heavy oil and grease.

2. Cathodic Cleaning

The component is connected to the negative terminal. Hydrogen bubbles form on the surface and improve deep cleaning action.

3. Anodic Cleaning

The component is connected to the positive terminal for a short duration to remove smut and improve activation.

4. Water Rinsing

After cleaning, parts should be rinsed properly with clean water. A properly cleaned surface should show smooth water flow without water breaks.

How Electro-Cleaning Improves Zinc Plating Quality

  • ✔ Better zinc coating adhesion
  • ✔ Reduced peeling risk
  • ✔ Improved plating shine
  • ✔ Uniform passivation performance
  • ✔ Better corrosion resistance

Proper electro-cleaning is one of the most important factors in industrial zinc electroplating quality control.

Industrial Cost Saving Tips

Heat Insulation

Insulating the tank helps reduce electricity consumption and maintains stable temperature.

Oil Removal

Removing floating oil from the cleaning bath increases chemical life and improves process stability.

Chemical Recovery

Allowing excess solution to drip back into the tank helps reduce chemical wastage.

Safety & Environmental Precautions

  • ✔ Use gloves, goggles and apron
  • ✔ Maintain proper ventilation
  • ✔ Neutralize wastewater before discharge
  • ✔ Maintain safe chemical handling practices

Industrial safety and environmental management are essential for responsible electroplating operations.
